Warm weather and long days mean one thing – BBQ season is in full swing! Did you prepare your grill for the coming season properly? Check these 5 easy steps you should do after a few months of not using your grill. Did you skip some steps? There is still time left to fix it before you throw a 4th of July Grill Party!

  1. Do an Inspection & Check the Propane Tank

After a few months you didn’t use your grill, it is important to do an inspection from the bottom to the top. If you stored your grill outdoors during the winter, check if there are any signs of rust. Maybe you would need to replace the grates or some other parts. If using a gas grill, don’t forget to inspect the propane tank for your safety. Apply soapy water where the propane tank’s cylinder valve and regulator outlet connect. If bubbles occur, there is a propane leak. In that case, turn off the main gas supply valve and tighten the screws and valve. If it doesn’t help, don’t try to repair it at home, and contact your gas supplier right away to solve the issue.

  1. Take Care of your Grill Station

After you are done with the inspection, it is time to clean your grill station inside and out. Because a dirty grill will have an impact on your meal. First, scrub the grease off the grill with a metal or wood scraper or grill brush. Spray the grates and inside of the grill with grill degreaser or stainless cleaner (or mix three-quarters of a cup of white vinegar, one-quarter of water, and a few drops of dish soap), leave it for about half an hour, and then wash it with warm soapy water. Also, don’t forget about the outside of the grill.

  1. Season Grill Grates

If everything looks good by now, remember to season your grill. It keeps your grill less sticky, protects the grates from rust, and makes it easier to clean. Both types of grates iron cast and steel will benefit from the seasoning. It is very simple. Spray oil with a high smoke point, such as peanut oil or canola oil all over the grates. Then use a kitchen paper towel to wipe off excess oil. The goal is to create a thin and even oil layer on your grill grates. Then turn your grill on high heat for about 30 minutes. And you are done! Both types of grates, iron cast and steel will benefit from the seasoning.
